IES “Legio VII” is a Public Secondary School located in Spain’s northwest city of León and built on a piece of land where Roman legions once lived (the backyard where younger students play during breaks retains the original part of a Roman wall erected around 2000 thousand years ago, making it the most historical yard of all Spanish high schools).

It has been providing public education from the year 1982 and it currently targets two levels: Compulsory Secondary Education (1/2/3/4 ESO) and Sixth Form (1/2 Bachillerato). It also develops a Distance-Learning Programme for adult people, being the only authorised school in the Province of León to offer this type of education at both levels.

The school’s educational philosophy is influenced by this diversity of social backgrounds and levels, which entails dealing with of a diversity of needs within the classroom groups and with the subsequent complexity of the teaching-learning process implementation. Consequently, the school
prioritises addressing cross-curricular issues such as social/educational inclusion, interculturality and critical thinking in the overall teaching-learning process.

The general scope of IES Legio VII’s work is to deliver accredited quality education (both compulsory and post-compulsory) to ALL its students, the quality of which is based
on a multiple perspective approach:

  • Inclusive Education, achieved through the promotion of equality as an essential cross-curricular element, being aware that recognising the diversity of capacities, contexts and expectations is the first step towards the development of an inclusive educational structure. It develops various plans to cater for diversity and boost the integration of all students into the teaching / learning process.
  • Competence-based Approach: the integration of key competences (1. Declarative knowledge; 2. Skills and Know-how; 3. Existential competence; 4. Ability to learn (CEFR P. 9, 2001) is a nuclear element for IES Legio VII, which inevitably leads to the selection of innovative teaching strategies to provide our students with the possibility of developing meaningful learning habits.
  • Promotion of Democratic Values, as a cross-curricular element addressed in all areas and subjects, especially raising awareness on the need to defend and practice European values and attitudes, such as Education for Peace and Non discrimination; Multicultural and Intercultural Awareness; Gender Equality or Sustainability Awareness.
  • Integration of ICTs in Education: IES Legio VII considers the integration of ICTs fundamental in every present-day teaching methodology, especially with the aim to achieve the development of competences, solve possible educational shortfalls and make education more inclusive.
